Camp along the Mogollon Rim.

Camp on Arizona's Mogollon Rim

The Payson Ranger District encompasses all sides of the town of Payson, extending northward to the majestic Mogollon Rim in Arizona. Spanning approximately 450,000 acres (182,000 hectares), this district boasts diverse vegetation, including Chaparral, Pinyon-Juniper, and Ponderosa Pine forests. It is traversed by the scenic Verde River and numerous trout streams, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

One unique aspect of the Payson Ranger District is its separate operational setup compared to the rest of the forest. The Tonto Pass, which is commonly required for day-use and camping in other areas, is not applicable in the Payson Ranger District. Instead, day-use and camping fee sites are managed by a concessionaire located at Houston Mesa Campground. This district is well-known for its well-maintained campgrounds, extensive hiking trails, and abundant fishing opportunities, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and recreational activities alike.
